Record-Breaking Earthquake of the Day: Oklahoma was rattled last night by a 5.6-magnitude earthquake — the strongest in the state’s history — as tremors continued to shake the region for a second straight day. According to the Oklahoma Geological Survey, the quake’s epicenter was four miles east of Sparks, but was easily felt as far away as Illinois and Tennessee.

The record-setting shake was preceded by seven quakes, touched off by a 4.8-magnitude temblor near Prague early Saturday morning. A 4.0 aftershock shook Oklahoma City this morning.

Homes and businesses were damaged in Lincoln County, and portions of roads — including US 62 — had buckled, but no injuries were reported. The National Weather Service reports that a large swarm of birds and bugs took flight as the quake struck.

“It was a pretty ornery little earthquake,” Lincoln County’s emergency manager Joey Wakefield told The Oklahoman.

The last earthquake to rival the magnitude of the one near Sparks occurred in El Reno in 1952. According to the geological survey, it registered a 5.5.
